Penn warns of check scam

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - March 6, 2008 People across the country have been receiving unsolicited checks that look like they're from Penn. But university officials say they are fraudulent.

The checks are typically for amounts between $2,000 and $8,000.

But Penn associate treasurer Pamela Arms says banks won't honor them - and may charge a fee to those who try to cash them.

Arms says more than 100 fake checks have surfaced over the past 12 months.

Anyone who receives a check from Penn for no reason should contact the school or authorities.
