Shooting of 'nuisance turkeys' upsets residents

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - April 7, 2008

Local residents had complained about the birds interfering with traffic and acting aggressively.

But then there were protests after three turkeys were killed Friday.

Tony McBride, a biologist for the state, says the officer followed department protocols. He said trapping isn't a good option when it isn't winter.

Victor Amato with the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also said the officer followed the rules.
