Venus Williams leads area youth clinic

WILMINGTON, Del. - July 8, 2008 But tonight, her focus is on future tennis stars in Delaware who are inspired by her achievements.

Just being able to watch Venus Williams play is a treat for many of the local kids gathered here.

But to have some one-on-one time with the newly-crowned Wimbledon champ is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"I'm just happy to be here, to be able to hit with her. It's really exciting," said 17-year old Serena Walker.

The kids were part of a youth tennis clinic at the duPont Country Club led by Venus Williams.

Williams won her 5th Wimbledon singles title over the weekend after a heartpounding match with her younger sister Serena.

After the two battled for the trophy in the grass court grand slam, Venus and Serena later joined forces to win the doubles championship. For now these local kids look forward to having the champ all to themselves.

"For us to hit with her, that's going to be very special. I just want to say Venus, we love you and we appreciate everything you're doing for us," said 15-year old Alex Oates.

Venus was in town to play with the Delaware Smash Tuesday night in a World Team Tennis pro match.
