Paving the way for online music
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM (AP) - July 17, 2008 The EU has ordered music copyright
groups to end a system that forced online sellers to negotiate
music rights for each country separately. That has kept iTunes from
setting up a single store from which it can serve all of Europe.
Instead, it has had to secure licenses from each EU member state in
which it wants to do business.
The EU-ordered change should also
help companies obtain broadcast licenses for the Internet, cable
television and satellite for several countries by using just one
collecting society of their choice.
