3 dead in fatal car accident

CLAYMONT, Del. - January 25, 2009 The accident happened at around 1:30 Saturday afternoon in the southbound lanes of I-95 at Marsh Road in Claymont, Delaware.

When State Troopers arrived at the scene, they saw one of the cars involved in the accident fully engulfed in flames.

Delaware State Police have determined that the driver of a Ford Explorer, 50-year-old Lamont Felder of Wilmington, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and driving in an aggressive manner.

Witnesses advised at one point the Explorer passed between two other vehicles straddling the dotted center line.

Felder drove onto the right shoulder of I-95 northbound, then over steered causing him to lose control. The Explorer next crossed the wide grass median and drove up a dirt mound. The Explorer began to roll as it entered the southbound lanes of I-95 southbound and eventually rolled on top of a Mercury Grand Marquis.

Both Felder and passenger, 47-year-old Lovell Collins of Wilmington, were ejected from their vehicle. Collins was pronounced dead at the scene. Felder was transported to Christiana Hospital where he died.

The Mercury Grand Marquis caught fire as a result of the crash. A passing motorist pulled the driver of the Mercury, 72-year-old Anderson M. Davis of Philadelphia, from the driver's seat, however Davis died at the scene.

78-year-old Sallie Hunter of Philadelphia, the passenger in the Mercury, had to be extricated from the vehicle by Fire and Ambulance crews.

The passing driver and State Troopers utilized numerous fire extinguishers attempting to keep the fire at bay until Fire crews could arrive.

Hunter was transported to Christiana Hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

While police investigated, both the north and south bound lanes were closed on I-95 by Marsh Road.
