Last-minute deal saves Hammonton hospital

HAMMONTON, N.J. (AP) - March 7, 2009 Officials at Hammonton's Kessler Memorial Hospital had told employees Friday that they couldn't pay them.

But later that day, they reached an agreement to sell the hospital to B. Reddy Dandolu, a cardiovascular surgeon with the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Members of the hospital's board of directors also pledged to dig into their own pockets, if necessary, to help cover the cost of a $200,000 loan from the town to cover the payroll shortfall.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that the hospital was nearly taken over by the operators of Bayonne Medical Center before that deal fell through on Thursday.
