Heavy smoke was showing on the second floor of a house on arrival.
Two people were pulled from the house by fire crews.
A 75-year-old man and his 58-year-old wife were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The woman is being treated for nonlife threatening injuries.
The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes.
The house had a working smoke detector on the first floor, but the one on the second floor had no batteries.
Fire officials say the couple had hearing and mobility problems.
The cause is under investigation.
