Former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Daniel O'Hern has died in his Red Bank home. His family says the 78-year-old had metastatic melanoma of the brain.

O'Hern was appointed to the court by Gov. Brendan T. Byrne in 1981 and served for 19 years.

He participated in the 1988 "Baby M" decision that banned surrogate-mother contracts and the 1995 ruling that upheld Megan's Law.

O'Hern is survived by his wife and five children.
