Teen places 3rd in global marketing contest

CAMDEN, Del. (AP) - May 12, 2009 Siobain McIlvain skipped her prom and traveled to Anaheim, Calif., last week to compete in the DECA International Career Development Conference.

Students from Europe, Mexico, Canada and the U.S. compete by creating advertising campaigns and taking marketing, accounting and economics tests.

The 18-year-old from Dover chose the National Breast Cancer Foundation for her campaign. She placed third for her 10-page paper which included a budget, advertising and a hypothetical fundraiser.

McIlvain was awarded a full scholarship to Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I., where she'll pursue a management and accounting degree.
