Thai zoo surprised by panda cub birth

BANGKOK (AP) - May 27, 2009 They didn't even know the 7-year-old female was expecting. She'd been been artificially inseminated months ago, but had given no signs that she was pregnant.

The zoo director says the panda had been acting a little anxious yesterday, then gave birth earlier today.

The cub screeched loudly as soon it was born, but seems to be fine.

The U.S., Japan and Thailand are the only countries outside China that have bred pandas through artificial insemination.
