Bob Dole gets leg skin graft

WASHINGTON (AP) - July 13, 2009

Dole has been hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for a couple weeks.

The skin graft was performed early Monday morning and took about 40 minutes, Dole spokesman Mike Marshall said. Dole has said he hopes to be out of the hospital by his 86th birthday on July 22.

Dole initially thought he had heart problems. Doctors decided his heart was fine but found open sores on his legs.

Dole ran twice unsuccessfully for the presidency and was a vice presidential candidate. He served in the House and Senate where he served as Senate majority leader.
