5-week-old abused in Tacony may not live

TACONY - September 19, 2009 Medics transported the boy from the 6300 block of Dittman Street in the city's Tacony section to St. Christopher's around 10:30 a.m.

Investigators now say this is a case of child abuse. The only question now is: Who is responsible?

According to SVU, they continue to investigate the situation and there are no charges at this time. Detectives are trying to speak to the family, however they are not being cooperative and refuse to speak to police. They have hired a lawyer. The child is in critical condition, and authorities say the child may not survive.

He is being treated for cracked ribs, bruising on the face and a broken right femur.

A neighbor tells Action News he heard the baby crying around 2:30 a.m., but didn't think anything of it. Paramedics arrived about eight hours later and neighbors say the infant was blue in color.

Neighbors also say the child's father was hysterical, and got in the ambulance as it transported the child away. Those neighbors add the mother went inside, got dressed, and left for the hospital about 45 minutes later.

The Philadelphia Police Special Victims Unit is investigating.
