Grateful Dead archives going digital

The archives of the Grateful Dead are getting federal help to go digital. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports The Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California Santa Cruz library has won a federal grant of $615,000 to put it online. Two-thirds of the material in the archive came from band members themselves.

The donated collection includes band member journals, toys, photos, tickets and other memorabilia. Not only will the public be able to view the items online, they will be able to contribute by submitting digital photos.

Library spokeswoman Christine Bunting says it's in the spirit of the Grateful Dead sharing their music.
