One thing I've tried this year is to finish most of the shopping before Thanksgiving. I shop online to keep it easy! I told the girls my plan in hopes to avoid the constant updates to the never-ending Christmas list. I'm also trying to lead by example. If I'm done with my shopping they'll see that I'm not focused on presents. However, it's sort of backfiring, because they have "explained" to me that "Santa" can get them last minute changes even if I can't! At least I tried!
We also celebrate Advent in a fun way. Every Sunday we pick a name out of a hat. It's similar to playing Secret Santa, but instead of buying presents we try to do nice things for that person all week. For example, give someone a compliment to lift their spirits, do one of their chores as a surprise, or leave them a little treat under their pillow. The kids really get into it and I find their good will is contagious. We all seem to be nicer to each other. Of course, it's only day 2!
I hope by celebrating Advent we can get excited about more than just presents. I'm still brainstorming for other ideas. So, I'll blog about that next week!
