Mrs. Fixit: Clean and Polish

January 31, 2010

It may sound more like salad dressing than a solution, but my favorite wood cleaner and polish is a mixture of white vinegar, mineral oil or baby oil and water. You want a quarter cup each of baby oil and white vinegar and a half a cup of water. Put it in a shaker bottle and shake it well to thoroughly combine the solution.

Pour a little on a microfiber cloth and work it into the wood in a circular motion making sure not to OVER WET the wood. The vinegar REMOVES DIRT and residue from the surface and the oil adds moisture and polishes the wood to a gorgeous shine.

To tackle spindles or other tight crevices, use a soft bristled toothbrush to apply the solution, I would dab the toothbrush on a cloth before starting so you don't have cleaner dripping all over the place. Once you've worked the solution into the wood, use a second cloth to buff it to a shine.

A gallon of vinegar and a bottle of mineral oil costs less than five dollars and you can mix it up whenever you need SOME; adjust the recipe for the size of the job you need! I'm Mrs. FIXIT and it's just that simple!
