Penalty phase continues in armored car killings

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - February 22, 2010

The attorneys for 39-year-old Mustafa Ali are to begin presenting their case Monday in the penalty phase of Ali's murder trial.

A jury convicted Ali of first-degree murder last week in the slayings of armored car guards William Widmaier and Joseph Alullo during a robbery outside a bank in October 2007.

Defense attorney Karl Schwartz told the jury that no one would want to be judged by the worst thing they've ever done. Ali's attorneys acknowledged he killed the guards but insisted he didn't intend to kill them.

Ali, formerly Shawn Steele, served seven years in prison for robbing several banks in the early 1990s.
