Two killed in Center City hit-and-run crash

PHILADELPHIA - March 18, 2010

It happened early Thursday morning at 16th and Vine in Philadelphia. That's where, police say, a speeding Buick Regal ran a red light at 16th and Vine and smashed into a Toyota Corolla.

Inside that car were Zhihua Lin and Lian Chun Li, who were killed instantly.

Police say it all began when the Buick and several other cars left a Center City nightclub shortly after 1:30 a.m.

The Buick rear-ended a cab at 16th and Market, then a patrol officer spotted the speeding convoy.

The officer gave chase, and a few seconds later the Buick crashed.

Police say two men hopped out of the Buick and into a dark colored Pontiac G-6, and sped away.

The Buick is registered to a Southwest Philadelphia woman. Police say her family is cooperating with authorities.

Investigators are also gathering surveillance video to see if it will provide any clues.

Family members of one of the crash victims came to the scene early this morning hoping for answers.

With tears in her eyes, Manqing Lin told Action News it was her father who died in the crash. She said her father, Zhihua Lin, had been attending a late night meeting of Chinese business owners in Chinatown and was heading home with his best friend when their Toyota Corolla was broadsided.

She said her father came to the United States from China 21 years ago.

He leaves behind two daughters.
