Teen struck, killed by car near her school

WHITEMARSH TWP., Pa. - March 29, 2010

Police say the victim is Denise Cotteta, 17, of Plymouth Meeting. She was a student at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School.

Investigators say Cotteta was struck around 11:30 p.m. Sunday while trying to cross East Germantown Pike near Mayflower Road in Whitemarsh Township. Investigators say she was on her way home from her boyfriend's house.

Cotteta was badly injured, and died a short time after arriving at the hospital.

That intersection is near the high school.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman says Cotteta may have been celebrating the school's state basketball championship before she was struck.

Just this past weekend, the Plymouth-Whitemarsh boys basketball team won the Class AAAA title after beating Penn Wood.

Investigators say the driver who struck Cotteta fled the scene but was quickly located and is cooperating with investigators. No charges have been filed.

"The driver of the car is fully cooperating with detectives and is being interviewed," said Chief Eileen Behr of the Whitemarsh Township Police.

Toxicology tests on both the driver and Cotteta are pending. Friends gather to mourn

Cotteta's classmates gathered at the scene Monday. Dozens of people were seen standing in a circle, holding hands. Many of them were in tears.

A friend said the world lost someone wonderful.

"We've lost an amazing person, and that's all that matters," said friend Jill Schwab. "She was a daughter, a friend, and a sister to a lot of us."

Cotteta was a star lacrosse player and a star field hockey player. One classmate said the news of her death spread like lightning.

"You hear about a girl from your school who was in an accident and died," said Brandon Brown. "We all jumped up and were like "Oh my God, Denise! Are you serious?"

There were no classes at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School on Monday because of spring break.
