Canine officer runs down robbery suspect

CLAYMONT, Del. - March 31, 2010

19-year-old Darrion Beecham, of the 1000 block of Peach Street in Claymont, is charged with robbery and resisting arrest.

The arrest stems from an incident last Friday at the Wawa, located on Carpenter Station Road in Claymont. Police say the robbery victim was able to identify the subject by his nickname, "Breeze."

Investigators say Breeze approached the victim and threatened to shoot him as he went through his pockets looking for cash. When the victim indicated he had no money, he was forced to enter the WAWA store and remove cash from the ATM machine. Breeze then got back into a car and drove off with the victim's money.

Breeze was later identified as Darrion Beecham from the victim's high school yearbook.

At 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, Officer Ed Mousley and his canine partner Quattro were patrolling the area of Peachtree Road near the Greentree Apartments when Beecham was spotted walking on a footpath.

Officer Mousley attempted to take him into custody but Beecham ran off. Quattro caught up to Beecham in no time, and held him until assisting officers could place him into custody.

Beecham was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated and released for puncture wounds. He was later arraigned on the robbery and resisting arrest offenses and committed to the Howard Young Prison after failing to post $11,000 secured bail.
