Teens face charges for bottle bomb attacks

NEWTOWN, Pa. - April 1, 2010

The bombs were made with common household items.

The first exploded inside a trashcan inside a Starbucks store in Newtown, Pa. on around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

"There were three young people who came into the store, but didn't purchase anything. They sat at a table and as soon as [the bombs] went off, they went out the back door," said Newtown Borough Police Chief Anthony Wojchiechowski.

Another exploded just outside Newtown at a Wendy's restaurant. A short time later a third went off in an aisle inside a CVS store.

Chief Wojchiechowski, who used to work in Philadelphia's bomb squad, says startled customers fled.

No one was seriously hurt, but two people did get treatment for inhalation injuries.

"I was on the scene perhaps 45 minutes after the detonation and when I entered the CVS it was still burning my eyes and throat," Chief Wojchiechowski said.

Investigators closed in on the suspects when one returned Tuesday night to survey the damage. A manager recognized him and he was quickly identified.

"This is not fun, this is not a joke. People can get seriously injured," said Chief Wojchiechowski. "You need to stop and think."

The teens will be charged with risking a catastrophe and reckless endangerment.
