Mother, daughter marbles champions

SHILLINGTON, Pa. - April 13, 2010 Debra Stanley-Lapic and her daughter Whitney comprise what is nothing short of a sports dynasty. Simply put, the two Shillington, Berks County residents are among the best in the world at marbles.

"You don't usually hear we're going to play marbles together you don't usually hear something like that and it's so different from everything else," said Whitney Lapic.

Debra won the American women's marbles championship back in 1973. And 14-year-old Whitney is the reigning national champion.

Debra says it's a title her daughter was born to attain.

"Her birthing announcement said announcing the birth of a future national marbles champion so she was kind of destined to be a national champion."

And these two marbles champions recently got back from what turned out to be a trip of a lifetime both were invited to the World Marbles Championship in England with Debra entered in the 50 years and older class.

There they were competing together among the world's best for 11 straight hours on outdoor arenas in suburban London under harsh conditions.

"We played in the pouring rain through mud; there was a moat around one of the rings which made it quite difficult to get into a comfortable position," Whitney explained.

And when the smoke cleared, these marble sharp-shooters both came just short of world championships.

"We both ended up getting second we would have liked to get first but we were so pleased with second," said Debra.

Debra says, in the end, she walked away from the experience with something more than a trophy she now has a priceless memory with her daughter. A young lady, Debra says, has not only developed into a wonderful teammate but her closest friend as well.
