Scholastic success pays off for local twins

PHILADELPHIA - May 6, 2010

Sylvia and Guovanna Shoukri are identical twins who share many of the same interests, including a thirst for knowledge. The seniors will also be sharing a $320,000 scholarship from Drexel University.

"The same school, the same major, the same scholarship. It was unbelievable, it took a while for it to hit us," Guovanna said.

"We always wanted to go to Drexel. We did apply to other schools but Drexel is our dream school," said Sylvia.

The Shoukri twins are among 50 students in the region to receive the first Liberty Scholarship from Drexel. Both are getting the same award, which amounts to about $33,000 a year each for five years.

This news makes their single mom especially proud.

"It's a miracle. I'm telling you it's a miracle because I was so worried how I was going to get this because I don't want them to spend the rest of their lives paying money back for college," said Melanie Shoukri.

The twins are second and third in their class, and both carry a 4.0 GPA. They say they do have slightly different personalities, but both want to major in Biology- Pre Med.

"We have strengths in different areas, whereas I'm more creative she's more into literature and English," Guovanna said.

"I'm so excited to get into college and start working on my career. I'm so excited for that," said Sylvia.

Sylvia and Guovanna say they plan to be together for a long time. Once they achieve their dream of becoming doctors, they just might open a practice together.
