Pa. woman surrenders in husband's hunting death

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - May 14, 2010

Forty-four-year-old Mary Beth Harshbarger surrendered to federal authorities in Scranton on Friday.

She has been taken to the Lackawanna County jail and will be transferred to the custody of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The Wyoming County woman is charged with criminal negligence causing death and careless use of a firearm in the death of her husband, Mark, in September 2006.

Mary Beth Harshbarger says she mistook her husband for an approaching bear and shot him during a hunting trip near Buchans Junction, Newfoundland.

Canadian officials charged Harshbarger because they say it was too dark for her to fire a gun safely.
