UN urges Koreas to avoid raising tensions

UNITED NATIONS - June 14, 2010

After listening to separate presentations from South Korea and North Korea, the council issued a press statement late Monday appealing to both countries to refrain from any act that could escalate tensions in the region.

South Korea accused North Korea at the council meeting of torpedoing the ship on March 26, but the North denied responsibility and called itself "a victim."

South Korea has asked the council to respond "in a manner appropriate to the gravity of North Korea's military provocation." The Security Council said it will continue its consultations on the incident.
