Biden's not-so-smart remark in custard shop

June 28, 2010

The vice president was in Wisconsin raising money for Senator Russ Feingold's campaign.

He dropped in at a frozen custard shop. Biden got a scoop and asked the manager how much he owed him. The manager said, "Don't worry. It's on us. Lower our taxes and we'll call it even."

That's what prompted the following response.

Biden: "Why don't you say something nice instead of being a smart ass all the time. Say something nice."

Afterward, the manager said he enjoyed his banter with the vice president.

"It was very nice," said the manager. "He's got a great personality."

But the manager admits the vice president didn't seem happy, at first, about the "lower our taxes" comment.
