Firefighters worked frantically to attack the blaze.

"I have 11 companies at this time and it's a pretty tough situation because I have no access from the river side of the project," Chief Steve Wanczyk of the Bridgeport Fire Department said.

Nearby residents like Bobby Cox say they heard an explosion from the warehouse around 2:30 p.m.

"It was like the propane tanks from the forklifts blowing up," Cox said.

Sam Martinez, a worker at the candle factory, says one of his coworkers lives at the facility and he too heard an explosion.

"He heard an explosion and when he got out, everything was burning already," Martinez said.

"It was well-involved when we got here; we had some roof collapse to the rear of the building and we went into a defensive mode," Wanczyk said.

In addition to flames and smoke, firefighters had to deal with sweltering conditions.

EMS crews brought in fans and bottled water, but by late afternoon, no injuries had been reported.

"At least everybody was safe," Cox said.

The fire was contained by 6:00 p.m.
