Woman and young girl caught in Hunting Park crossfire

HUNTING PARK - August 8, 2010

Police say a relative was braiding the child's hair while sitting on the front steps at 1:45 a.m. when it all started.

Five unknown males got into a verbal altercation with each other. After the suspects walked away, the victims reportedly heard 3 gunshots.

The victims, a 22-year-old female and a 9-year-old female, ran inside but not before being struck by the bullets.

The 22-year-old was shot in the right leg and the child was struck in the left leg. Both were transported to Temple University Hospital, but the child was later transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital. Both are in stable condition.

"It's a shame how you can't sit down on your own stoop, enjoy a nice summer night without something crazy like this happening," a neighbor told Action News.

Police are now looking for the men behind all this.

This is one of two incidents involving children injured by bullets overnight. Two hours earlier, a 3-year-old child was also struck by gunfire in South Philadelphia.
