Del. lawmakers consider more casinos

DOVER, Del. - March 23, 2011

Democratic Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf of Rehoboth Beach says his bill could provide an economic boost for Delaware by creating construction and casino jobs.

But the bill, which is scheduled for committee debate Wednesday, is likely to face opposition from the three existing casinos in Dover, Harrington and Stanton.

As written, the bill would allow new casinos in Sussex and New Castle counties, with a committee appointed by the governor selecting which projects receive licenses.

Schwartzkopf notes that the owners of Delaware Park in Stanton recently opened a casino just over the border in Maryland, which he says will draw gamblers from Sussex County who now spend their money at Harrington.
