Police say speed played a role in a tragic crash in Philadelphia Saturday morning.

A car reportedly going at a high rate of speed slammed into a tree in Lawncrest.

Police rushed to the scene, the northbound Roosevelt Boulevard at Langdon Street, around 4:30 a.m.

Investigators say a passenger in the front seat was killed in the wreck. He is believed to be a man in his twenties. The driver, said to be a 25-year-old man, was seriously injured. He is being treated at Einstein Medical Center.

Police have not said if anything besides speeding contributed to the crash.
