The accident happened at the Delaware Swim and Fitness Club in New Castle at around 3:20 p.m.
A high angle rescue team pulled a 43-year-old man to safety within approximately 45 minutes.
The man fell 6 feet into the shaft.
Officials say he was exposed to hydraulic fluid and was decontaminated before being taken to the hospital.
New Castle County paramedics treated him for arm and possible back injuries. He was taken to Christiana Hospital in stable condition.
