9 shot outside Feltonville nightclub

FELTONVILLE - May 22, 2011

The city is now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the two gunmen involved in the shooting.

"This is outrageous, unacceptable, we will not tolerate this kiind of nonsense," Mayor Michael Nutter during afternoon press conference.

It happened outside the Felton Supper Club on the 4800 block of Rising Sun Avenue around 2:45 a.m.

Police say the bar was crowded just around closing time when an argument broke out inside. It then spilled out onto the street.

Witnesses say hundreds gathered on the sidewalk and shots rang out leading to people scattering in all directions.

"All you heard was bang, bang, bang, bang, and then people running down the street," witness Johnny Fluker told Action News.

The bullets hit nine people, four men and five women.

One victim, a 20-year-old man, remains in critical condition after being shot in the back and legs.

A 26-year-old woman was shot in the head.

All victims, ranging in age from 19 to 35, however, are expected to survive.

The police are trying to sort out all the details of the shooting. It is still not clear what touched off the violence or how many weapons were fired.

Responding officers found two armed men in a car parked in a nearby alley. They were taken in for questioning, but there's no word on whether or not they were involved in the shooting.

The police have been talking to the victims and numerous witnesses. So far, they haven't charged any suspects.

Mayor Nutter said the Feltonville club has been a nuisance for years and he intends to shut it down.

Someone was shot to death on the dance floor last December and the first Philadelphia murder of 2011 stemmed from a fight that started inside the club. The nightclub attracts patrons from as far away as Maryland.

"There's something going on in there and we'll get to the bottom of that. But for the moment, no one's going to be going in there because they're not going to be open," Nutter said.

The club has been shut down numerous times by the city in the past. It was allowed to reopen just last week.
