Abington parents petition for stop signs

ABINGTON TWP., Pa. - June 4, 2011

It was play ball all over Roychester Park on a beautiful Saturday, but as the games get played parents and some the older kids are nervous.

At the intersection of Harding and Corinthian, there's a two-way stop on Corinthian, but no stop signs on the corner of north and south bound Harding, where cars have been known to speed up or not see the very young kids charging into the street chasing errant balls.

Parents say there have been many heart-stopping near misses.

"Cars are just flying down this road way," said Christine Slavin. "It's a throughway through our neighborhood. There's no intention to even slow down."

"We just need to be real careful, because most of the drivers around here aren't really paying attention to us," said Max Bruestle.

"We have kids walking across, running across, foul balls from the baseball games, not even looking, and the cars aren't looking as well," explained Tom Andrews.

The parents have petitioned the township and have essentially been told there has to be a tragedy first in order for government officials to make any further moves.

The parents were told PennDOT standards have not been met at that intersection to allow for a 4-way stop sign.

Alan Freed of the Abington Township Traffic Safety Unit gave this response: "The intersection must average five crashes a year for a 3-year period. PennDOT does not allow installation of stop signs to slow traffic."

"I contacted some local officials and told them that a tragedy could happen if they don't do something about the stop sign, and they told me in a nutshell, that they've done some data research and there hasn't been enough accidents to warrant a 4-way stop sign," Andrews said.

So far the township is telling the parents that they've heard their complaints, but their request is denied.
