A young local actress makes movie debut

VILLANOVA, Pa. - June 24, 2011

The talented young actress just happens to suffer from cerebral palsy.

It is the first feature film for 11 year old Maddie Jones of Villanova. She hasn't for one moment let her debilitating disease stand in the way of reaching her full potential.

Maddie watched the movie, "Cost of a Soul" with her dad. She filmed the movie two years ago.

It is the story of an Iraqi War Veteran who returns home to a crime-filled Philadelphia neighborhood and the pregnant wife he abandoned, and for the first time he meets Hope, his disabled daughter.

"I don't think I was thinking about the intensity of each scene," said Maddie. "I was thinking 'why am I in a glass tube?'"

AWB, Acting Without Boundaries, is the non-profit that provides young people like Maddie the opportunity to pursue their love of acting.

Christine Rouse, who also has cerebral palsy, is AWB's executive director.

Maddie starred as Dorothy in AWB's the Wizard of Oz and also as Captain Hook. She has only done the one movie, but thinks she prefers the stage.

"I like the stage, except for the fact that if you mess up, there's no 'take again'," says Maddie.

And she says everyone should live their lives without boundaries.

"If it's sports you want to do or acting or anything you want to do, you shouldn't be like, 'no I can't do that'," says Maddie. "You're able to do it."

Maddie will star as Annie in AWB's fall production of "Annie" this fall on October 2nd at the Haverford School.
