Copper thieves strike Camden daycare

CAMDEN - January 9, 2012

Thieves busted a hole in the brick facade of his building and made their way into the basement, cutting out the copper piping for cash.

"We left on a Friday, we had heat. We came back on Monday and had no heat and no water," Sutton said.

And this isn't the first time.

Sutton says they've had their air conditioning units torn apart for copper piping in the past; the thieves even went onto the roof to steal the valuable metal.

"I would say to you that it's very safe to say that we've probably lost anywhere from $45,000 - $50,000 over the last couple of years in this building," Sutton said.

"If the businesses can't afford to replace this stuff on their own, they are going to have to close," Nicole Massey of Precious Little Lites said.

Sutton and other employees are pleading with Camden police for help.

The daycare has installed a surveillance camera and protective caging for the A/C units, but still, the thieves continue to steal.

"I just felt like that we needed some help and maybe, if we made it known what's going on someone would respond to us," Sutton said.

A spokesperson for Camden says police are doing all they can with limited resources. Much of the department's focus is on violent crimes versus property crimes.

When asked whether there would be increased patrols on Market Street for companies like Precious Little Lites, the spokesperson said he couldn't discuss patrols because it would give the criminals the upper hand.
