Local Marines save lives overseas, at home

PHILADELPHIA - January 11, 2012

Nearby, fellow Marine 23 year old SGT Devon Richio of South Philadelphia embraced his family and friends.

Both spent 7 months in Afghanistan and arrived to 30th Street Station by way of Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

"I haven't seen their faces in 7 months," said Cpl. Einstein. "We were out of contact for four months at a time. I can't believe I'm home."

Corporal Einstein is also a volunteer firefighter in Mount Laurel and a police officer in Riverton Borough.

Sgt. Richio is a firefighter in Philadelphia.

"He's saving lives here in Philadelphia, but he's doing it overseas. Just a wonderful person," said Sgt. Richo's mom, Tomika Vines.

This was the second tour the Marines served together. Their first was in Iraq.

"They were both deployed together, they both stayed together, and they were each other's support," said Kathy Shapiro, Cpl. Einstein's mother.

"We're glad to be home," said Sgt. Devon Richio. "This is the longest I've been away from Andrew, now so I'm getting a little nervous. No, we're just happy to be home."

Both were civil affairs operators with the 3rd Recon Battalion. Their colleagues from local police and fire companies wanted to make the Marines know how much they valued their service.

"We're showing our appreciation for his commitment and his family's sacrifice," said Captain Mike Richey from the Philadelphia Fire Department.

"We all experience this because of what they do over there; nothing that we did here. He's a hero," said John Stenton from the Mt. Laurel Fire Department.

The support for the men was overwhelming. Some friends and family found it

hard to even put into words how good it was to see them home safe and sound.

"I'm so very proud of him," said Vines.

"I'm thrilled," said Karen Lamb. "There are just no other words to describe it."

"The best feeling ever," said Kim Lamb.

Warrior Watch helped escort the Marines to their hometowns where they will stay until Sunday before heading back to DC.

But first things first… both Marines were looking for some hometown favorites to eat.

"I'm thinking Nick's Roast Beef maybe. Anyone here want to buy me Nick's Roast Beef?" asked Sgt. Richio.

Pretty sure that can be arranged.
