Philadelphia key test site for diabetes prevention

PHILADELPHIA, PA.; February 27, 2012

"For the next 16 weeks, you can participate in the national diabetes prevention program," says the upbeat announcer.

That's the start of a new program launching today in Philadelphia.

Anyone with Comcast's video-on-demand service can follow 6 real people as they try to make the changes that could prevent them from developing diabetes.

United Healthcare developed the reality series as an extension of the 'Not Me' diabetes prevention effort.

It's been successful in health clinics and fitness clubs, but the company wants to see if the video-on-demand method is a good way to get it to the public.

You can watch the series or join a year-long study to see if the videos help you.

All of the lessons are based on real-world experiences.

Dr. Philip Benditt, United Healthcare's medical director, say, "They go to a shoestore, to show how to pick out sneakers, in order to prevent injuries. cause you know if you're just starting to exercise, and you;re not used to it, that can set your whole program back."

In addition to Philadelphia, the program is being tested in Knoxville, Tennessee.

For more information, call - 1-877-304-1725, or check out the Project Not Me website.

You do not have to be a UnitedHealthcare subscriber to get into the study.
