The Hillsboro Times-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/HY7KuA ) auto shop employees called police Wednesday to say a man was sitting in his pickup truck, apparently confused. Police talked to Earl Lutterman and learned he got lost while driving in Evansville, Ind. He stopped in Hillsboro after a tire was damaged.
"He really couldn't explain how he got to Hillsboro," said officer Shawn Kelley, who drove Lutterman home in his cruiser and finished the 10-hour round-trip early Thursday.
"We talked for about the first 100 miles, and then he dozed off," the officer said. "We talked about carpentry and construction, which both of us used to do. He was happy."
Kelley left the man with his brother Norman Lutterman, who was very thankful that police returned him.
Norman Lutterman said learning that his brother drove so far away was a shock.
"He used to drive to Indianapolis for the state fair, but that's been seven or eight years back," Norman Lutterman said. "I don't know. It's just hard to believe."
Earl Lutterman no longer had a driver's license, and his license plate was expired. His brother was making arrangements to have the pickup truck towed.
