Police: Driver fired on NJ troopers during chase

BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. - May 2, 2012

When he refused to stop, troopers opened fire.

"Troopers are ordering him to halt and he's disobeying their commands," said NJ State Police Lieutenant Steve Jones. "One of the troopers, at least one, shot him."

State Police say Zaun was shot in the arm and chest but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

"I heard, "Pop, pop, pop!'"

Neighbor Bernie Kastner was in his living room when the chase ended across the street.

"I don't recall exactly what I heard but it was authoritative voices and then I heard the gunshots," said Kastner.

"All of a sudden we heard shooting and I hurry up and got the kids and went in the closet, I know that sounds strange," said Melanie Long. "We were terrified."

The chase to get to Brick was a wild one. Authorities tell us tape from trooper car dash cams show multiple muzzle flashes coming from the Pathfinder during the pursuit along I-195.

"Troopers reported he was firing his gun through the sunroof of that vehicle as it was traveling down the highway," said Jones.

On Wednesday the right lane of I-195 was blocked off in Jackson and teams of investigators could be seen along the side of the road looking for evidence and a gun.

Officials won't talk about what motivated Zaun to take off or why he picked the house in Brick, but they do say his vehicle was involved in another police pursuit in Bucks County yesterday. Police broke off the chase there.

Wednesday afternoon Zaun was charged with eluding, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. More charges could be filed in connection with the shots he allegedly fired from his car.
