Container on truck strikes overpass in Tacony

TACONY - February 5, 2013

Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer did not realize the metal cylinders he was carrying were too high to pass under that bridge.

It was around 7:15 a.m. when a tractor-trailer carrying three metal tanks crashed into a trestle, sending one tank onto the 4900 block of Princeton Avenue in the Tacony section of the city.

Police say the driver was traveling eastbound toward State Road hauling the load from upstate New York to a nearby recycling center. He did not have a permit and if he did, his route would not have been approved because of the haul's height.

Trains above reduced speed for a short time but returned to normal after a bridge inspector came to the scene.

The driver faces a $1,500 fine for carrying a load that was too high and for traveling without a permit. Until he pays, the city will hold his vehicle.
