15-year-old arrested in Fox Chase 'Knockout' attack

FOX CHASE - November 22, 2013

It was around 6:00 p.m. Thursday when police officers spotted a teenager in the area of Rhawn Street and Verree Road who fit the description of one of the suspects in the attack.

The 15-year-old was arrested without incident and charged with Aggravated Assault, Criminal Conspiracy and related charges.

The juvenile suspect's identity is not being released due to his age.

The attack happened at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, November 11th on the 7900 block of Verree Road.

29-year-old Mark Cumberland was walking into Verree Pizza when he was approached by a young white male who asked him for a cigarette. As Cumberland was handing over a cigarette he was jumped by four white males.

Police say the suspects were in the company of two white females at the time of the incident.

After repeatedly punching and kicking Cumberland, the suspects fled the scene.

Cumberland was transported to Aria-Torresdale Hospital by paramedics where he received treatment for cuts and bruises to his head, face and eyes.

"When they jumped me down there, I got punched in the throat and the face. And if they would have hit me a little bit harder, I could have been bleeding in my throat and had major surgery," Cumberland told Action News.

He also has a few questions for his attackers.

"Why? Like, what was the purpose of it? You didn't get anything from me or anything. Was it really that fun? Was it worth it? Was it better than playing online? Better than playing a video game?"

Action News spoke with Cumberland on Thursday - a little over a week after the attack. Just a few hours later, police made an arrest.

The search continues for the remaining suspects.
