Police say a male was shot around 11:00 a.m. Thursday while driving at 12th Street and Melrose Avenue, just off the campus.
The victim, who is not a Widener student, was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The shooter remains on the loose.
Widener University Spokesperson Dan Hanson tells Action News that the university sent out a text and email at 11:01 a.m. to all students and employees saying the campus was in lockdown.
The lockdown was lifted around 11:30 a.m. when Chester Police informed them that no students or personnel are in danger.
"Update: Chester Police have informed Widener that the shooting occurred off campus & that there is no threat. Return to normal operations," the university tweeted.
