Montgomery County authorities are investigating the possible sighting of a bear in Abington Township.

Police responded to a report of a bear spotted in the area of Shady Lane and Pine Road.

An Action News viewer snapped a photo of the animal in question.

There is no word yet on the size of the bear.

There have been several recent bear sightings in nearby lower Bucks County.

It was late this past Saturday night when Dean Evangelou of Richboro heard some kind of commotion in his backyard.

He says, "I thought it was a raccoon, because I've had raccoons back there before. I came out with a flashlight, stuck my head out the door here, pointed the flashlight over there to try to spook the animal... It wasn't a raccoon - it was a bear."

Evangelou found the bear rummaging through his trash looking for food.

That took place just one day after reports came in of a bear sighting in neighboring Newtown.

It was seen during the day, not far from St. Andrew's School on Wright Road. The news was enough to prompt the school to cancel their outdoor activities.

Local police have been monitoring the situation.
