A Reading man is getting 15 to 30 years in state prison for killing an 11-month-old girl he was baby-sitting. The victim, Chailynn Brown-Hernandez, was beaten, burned and sexually assaulted in December 2006.

The prosecutor had sought a sentence of 25 to 50 years for 21-year-old Rokie Torres because of the brutality of the crime. Berks County Judge James Bucci says he gave a shorter sentence in part because he wants Torres to have a chance to make something of himself after he leaves prison.

Torres denied hurting the girl, but was convicted Nov. 1 of third-degree murder, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced Friday.
