One of the nation's top prep centers is joining the Rutgers men's basketball team. The university announced Monday night that Gregory Echenique has signed a letter of intent to play for the Scarlet Knights.

The Big East school also announced that forward Jonathan Mitchell, who was named Mr. New York Basketball 2006, will transfer to Rutgers from the University of Florida.

A Venezuelan native, the 6-9, 263-pound Echenique averaged more than 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks last season for St.

Benedict's Prep in Newark.

Mitchell, a 6-7, 243-pounder, played in 35 games over two seasons at Florida and was a member of its 2007 national championship team.

While he'll be able to take part in all team functions, he won't be able to play for the Scarlet Knights until the 2009-2010 season.
