What are squall lines?

Dateline article| David Murphy|

Squall lines are shown on weather maps as a dashed line ahead of and parallel to a cold front. Squall lines mark an area of uplift ahead of the front that is often home to a line of strong, gusty thunderstorms. You don't see this represented too often on TV weather maps, because it's easier and more effective to show you a radar image of the actual storms.
