Local cop indicted in sex cases

MOORESTOWN, N.J. - October 3, 2008 Prosecutors say Robert Melia, Jr., 38, of Moorestown, N.J. was indicted on 45 counts related to the sexual assaults of three girls between June 2000 and January 2008. Melia's girlfriend Heather Lewis, 33, was also indicted on the same counts for the crimes alleged by the girls.

Melia, a suspended patrolman in the Moorestown police department, also faces charges linked to alleged sex acts he performed with cows in Southampton in 2006, and a boy.

The two have yet to be arraigned according to Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi. If convicted of all charges, both defendants could be incarcerated for the remainder of their lives.

Melia is free on $410,000 bail. Lewis has not posted her $300,000 bail.

This is an ongoing and active investigation. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office at 609-265-5879.

The investigation started in April. The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office Child Abuse – Sexual Assault Unit was contacted after one victim told her stepfather she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by the defendants inside Melia's home.
