Menu labeling coming to Phila.- Philadelphia News

PHILADELPHIA, PA.; November 6, 2008

Philadelphia City Council today approved an ordinance to put calories on menus and menu boards.

Other nutritional information, such as fat and sodium will also be available on request.

The measure is designed to help stem the rising tide of obesity. It has been under discussion for months.

Several restaurant associations were opposed to the measure. However, it had the backing of the American Heart Association the Institute of Medicine, the Surgeon General, the Food and Drug Administration, and the American Medical Association.

It will take effect in January, 2010. That gives eateries time to reformulate their menus.

The city joins New York City, the state of California, and other communities in ordering menu labeling
