Judge orders ankle bracelet, curfew for Madoff

NEW YORK – December 17, 2008 Madoff remains free on bail, with his wife and brother serving as co-signers for his bail package. A hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday in which Madoff was required to find two additional co-signers to vouch for him.

But with the scandal swirling around Madoff, he was unable to find co-signers. So the judge modified the bail package, and gave lawyers until next Monday to come up with additional paperwork.

He has already surrendered his passport, and now will be required to be at his Manhattan apartment from 7 p.m to 9 a.m.

Madoff was arrested on charges that he carried out what prosecutors say he called a $50 billion Ponzi scheme that has left people in ruin around the globe.
