Thrift shop donations save on taxes, offer bargains

December 30, 2008

That's according to Erin Hufstetler, Frugal Living editor for About.com.

If you have unwanted items at home, and you donate them to a charity's non-profit thrift shop before the end of the year, you can get a receipt that will enable you to get a tax deduction if you itemize.

On the flip side, since many people are donating to get those tax deductions, thrift shops end up with lots of good inventory, which they will sell at great prices, because they need the room.

So, before you ring in the new year, ring the bell at your local charity gift shop.
