Too many polar plunges

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - December 29, 2008

Rocky Frenzilli, who organized the first Lobster Dip at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, worries that the plethora of cold-water charity events will hurt his efforts to raise money for Special Olympics Maine.

There are now a half-dozen similar events in Maine for various causes, including an animal welfare group and an environmental organization. The amount of money the Lobster Dip has raised has been flat in recent years.

And what possesses someone to jump into water many degrees cooler than they are? Frenzilli says, "It makes you feel real warm inside when you're doing something special for other people."
